Functional Fitness Class in Hurst TX | Serving Keller, Watauga & Colleyville

Unlock Your Functional Mobility and Brain Power Through Play

Welcome to FunFit and ya’ll, this really isn’t like any physical fitness program you’ve ever tried.

We meet every Sunday at Mayfair Park in Hurst. What happens here is a little hard to explain, but it’s part workout, part brain training, part playground for adults (and kids love it too—anyone 5 and up can join! Neighborhood kids have caught on to some of the fun: practicing slackline with us and playing the beachball touchdown game! Essentially, this is one unique blend of movement therapy and outdoor fitness.

What’s the best way to describe FunFit? Remember yourself 9 years old and the pure joy playing outside? That’s what we’re doing here. Except now we are using the science to focus on movement that are also therapeutic exercise for your body and brain.

So What Actually Happens in Class?

Every session’s different— and that’s the point. But you can expect:

  • Playing fast twitch muscle reflex games that also make you think fast
  • Strengthening with all three isometric models
  • Then loosening with mobility sticks (a simple flexy stick that magically aligns your structure and makes stretching feel yummy)
  • Doing breathwork with our ribs, yes not the belly.
  • Trying parkour movements, acro yoga stretches, martial arts drills
  • Playing fun coordination like learn to juggle with eyes closed and games that we create ourselves

We pull from Applied Kinesiology which is ever evolving. We apply these principles and others that rely on great body mechanics, like martial arts, calisthenics, isometric bodybuilding, and slackline!  If it gets your brain and body working together in new ways, we’ll try it.

Here’s What Makes This Physical Fitness Program Different

Most fitness programs have you doing the same stuff week after week, right? Bench press Monday, leg day Thursday, whatever. Your body adapts and your brain checks out.  Six months later you’re bored out of your mind.

We don’t do that.

Our whole thing is neuroplasticity—keeping your brain engaged by constantly throwing new movement puzzles at you through therapeutic exercise and movement therapy. The cool part is that we also encourage our members bring their own expertise to share. Or even better, if you found something new and want to try learning it that’s what we are all about!

Like Christopher—he’s been with us from the beginning, and he’s introduced staff spinning and martial arts techniques that I never would’ve thought to include.  He is a blackbelt in mixed martial arts, but staff spinning is a new hobby he has picked up and introduced to class . That’s how we roll. Teaching is great way to learn too!

One of My Favorite Success Stories (Senior Fitness Done Right)

Starting out, Leslie who’s in his 60s, needed two support sticks just not to fall off the slackline. He felt stuck with no progress for months, until one day he discovered another kind of training wheel underneath his feet. He dropped his sticks and never returned to them again!

With his new training wheel he had to be ok just hanging there in one place, but for the first time he learned what it actually means to balance! Just three weeks later, it’s not unusual for him to walk 14 seconds on that slackline. No sticks. Just him and his focus. Now he laughs talking about his grandkids who are still clinging on to theirs and have to be bribed with sweets. Progress does get addictive! But you have to be ok with first putting on the brakes and that’s a practice in wisdom and patience!

So that’s what functional strength is. Solving real world challenges means finding the right approach to communicate with your body. You learn to trade in frustration for respect and awe with your body.  Senior fitness doesn’t mean easy or boring—it can be remarkably rewarding.  And its intelligence and patience is what we can all benefit from!

Balance Training & Coordination Exercises You’ll Actually Use

This isn’t about looking good in a mirror (though yeah, that will happen too). It’s about moving better in real life:

  • Standing taller, moving with better alignment
  • Joints that actually move the way they’re supposed to
  • Tendons that don’t ache or snap when you do something unexpected
  • Reflexes that help you catch yourself before you fall
  • Hand-eye coordination that makes juggling life easier
  • And what about confidence that comes from learning something completely new?

Where We Meet

Every Sunday at 3:30 PM
Mayfair Park, 220 W Louella Dr, Hurst, TX 76054
Look for yellow slackline next to the playground

Ages 5 and up welcome. Seriously—your whole family is welcome! It’s pretty awesome. This family fitness approach means youth fitness programs and senior fitness happen side-by-side, which creates this cool mentorship dynamic that’s not based on age.

The Science Part (I’ll Keep It Short)

Medical Gymnastics & Movement Therapy

Medical Gymnastics is a kind of therapeutic exercise that restores health and prevent illness. They were developed by physicians of ancient Greece and Rome!

How does that translate to FunFit?

  • Every movement has a purpose
  • We’re not just randomly making you tired
  • Everything’s designed to build real function
  • Classes are small so you actually get individual attention

Cookie-cutter program is definitely NOT what we are all about. Your body’s unique—why would we treat everyone exactly the same?

Your Brain Can Change—At Any Age

Neuroplasticity. Big word, simple concept: your brain rewires itself based on what you do.

When you learn new skills—especially physical skills that require coordination or constant analysis and adaptation —you’re literally building new neural pathways, better memory, faster learning, more resilience for life’s curveballs.  All the good stuff.

Whether you’re 20 or 85 your brain stays adaptable your whole life if you keep challenging your routine.

What a Session Actually Looks Like

Show up however you are—this physical fitness program works for everyone who wants to keep learning both physically and mentally.

Seriously—beginners and movement pros both can get a kick out of these classes. Thanks to our cross-disciplined approach.

We start with warm-ups, sometimes using breathing techniques that Olympic athletes use. But don’t worry, we scale everything and it’s very doable!

Then we get into the fun stuff with our outdoor fitness setup:

  • Partner games (way funner than working out alone)
  • Balance training with trees, suspension straps, balls, our own hands and feet, and slackline ofcourse
  • Punching pads for finesse and explosive power
  • Mobility sticks for coordination exercises
  • Random surprises—maybe a cool sword spin, maybe juggle with eyes closed, maybe a quick reflex self defense move or maybe something else

We also do specific mobility exercises focused on foot and ankle movement. Why? Because twisted ankles suck and are totally preventable if you build proper proprioception training. It’s called body armour!

Our Philosophy: Function First, Everything Else Follows

Here’s what we believe—your goal should be moving well with great body mechanics. Sculpt functional strength, and a good physique just… happens.

“No pain no gain.” No you won’t hear that in this class!

That’s garbage.

Pain is your body telling you to STOP. We listen to that in our movement therapy approach. If something hurts, we modify. We adjust. We find another way.

Because you know what injuries do? They set you back months. All that progress—gone. Then you’re in physical therapy, frustrated, and crying about starting over.

Why would we risk that? Smart training means you can keep training. That’s the whole point—whether you’re doing youth fitness programs or senior fitness, the principle stays the same.

Brain Training & Parkour Training in North Richland Hills, Hurst & Keller

The Community Thing Actually Matters

Everyone Brings Something

We encourage people to bring new movement ideas to class—parkour training techniques, martial arts drills, whatever you know or don’t and just want to practice with us!

Christopher with his staff spinning and martial arts background is a perfect example. He shows up with techniques I’d never even heard of, and suddenly everyone’s learning something completely new.

That’s our motto: constantly bringing fresh challenges that keep things exciting while building real skills.

When everyone contributes, the whole group benefits. So Simple.

Why Movement Beats Crossword Puzzles for Your Brain

[Image: Physical Fitness Program in North Richland Hills TX]

Don’t get me wrong—crossword puzzles are fine. But they only work short-term memory.

While, skill-based learning like juggling, mastering the slackline, coordination exercises with multiple props- that requires long-term retention. Research shows it’s way more effective for creativity and preventing cognitive decline.

Plus—and I can’t stress this enough—it’s actually FUN.

Our outdoor fitness setup and group fitness classes create this judgment-free zone where a 7-year-old and a 67-year-old are both figuring out the same challenge together. That’s real family fitness—youth fitness programs meeting senior fitness in the best possible way.

Want Some Homework Between Classes?

Switch Hands
Try simple coordination exercise by brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. That it feels unnatural and weird is your brain forming new pathways.

Learn Random Stuff
Learn new instrument or some words in another language. Try beginner parkour training. Anything that makes your brain go “wait, what?”

Meditate (Even Badly)
10-20 minutes. Focus on breathing and practice staying comfortable when your mind wanders.  Gently bring it back and continue.

Play Brain Games
No Not Apps, unless they make you move! Dance Dance Revolution is fine. Get one of those physical puzzle boxes if you know what I’m talking about. Follow my grandpa and go looking for edible mushrooms. Just kidding, there is none in Texas.

Visualize Good Stuff Every Morning
Your brain processes visualization almost like real experience. Use that to build positive mindset.

Mobility Exercises & Joint Health Tips Beyond Sunday Sessions

Other Stuff That Helps

Move More Generally
Stay moderately about 20 minutes each day. While our physical fitness program counts toward this, you need to do other stuff too. Brain especially benefits from activities that briefly speeds up your heart rate like Tabata, HIIT, or tennis. Then slow it way down by learning Tai Chi or something else you want to try!

Sleep For Real
7-9 hours. Your brain cements new pathways during sleep. Non-negotiable for brain training results.

Eat Actual Food
Raw walnuts, blueberries, avocados—your brain and joint health need good fuel.

Become Aware and Curious
Read things that get you out of your comfort zone and talk to people who don’t share your opinions

Do Thought Analysis
Notice negative patterns? Trace them to the source. This way you’re exercising the neural pathways to reshape how you see everything.

Growth Mindset Meets Physical Training

People who embrace challenges literally develop better brain plasticity because trying hard things triggers new neural connections.

That motivational advice comes from neuroscience!

How We Do This

A Challenge Doesn’t Equal An Obstacle
Can’t do something YET? Perfect. That’s where growth happens.

Process Over Results
Did you try? Did you show up? Did you help someone? That matters more than “success” by some arbitrary standard.

Learn From Everything
Fell off the slackline? Cool, lets analyze and see if our tweak works.

Every “failure” is just feedback.

Come Try It Out

At FunFit we know your nervous system stays adaptable your whole life. With consistent practice your brain will work better, your emotions will become more positive as you transform into a happier version of yourself.

It’s been a good long description, but the best thing you can do is experience it!
