Class Details:
Tao Yoga aka Dao Yoga builds body of steel, well surpassing any temporary benefits of commercial grounding mats. It incorporates elements of Tao, Qi Gong and Tai Chi movement meditations that calms the mind while opening energy channels within our bodies for self-healing. Other yoga modalities are likewise incorporated in this class to engage your whole neuromuscular skeletal system.
Tai Chi grounding techniques such as corkscrew are further explored to greatly improve energy levels, physical balance and strength, and open the joints. Taoist practices focus on tendons and bones to support your structure rather than muscle strength, conserves energy and vitality.
A yoga fusion of eccentric, plyometric, standing stretches and PNF components gives your body and mind a well-rounded conditioning. These include animal flow, vinyasa, power yoga, yoga sculpt and yin yoga. All exercises are designed to build tendon and ligament strength, endurance, and elasticity. Isometric principles of dynamic tension yoga build functional muscle tone and strength.
Mobility sticks not only make challenging poses more comfortable, but also encourage great alignment and full body skeletal muscle engagement.
All fitness levels are welcome. When you RSVP please let us know if pregnant and trimester. Modifications will be provided.

A Deeper Dive into Iron Shirt Chi Kung of Tao Yoga
Tao Yoga goes beyond flow with Iron Shirt Chi Kung Taoist practice as its guiding principle. It helps build resilience and optimize vital energy. Practitioners learn to cultivate Qi and harness Qi, strengthening their physical structure and spiritual awareness. This system enhances internal organ function, develops strong balanced musculoskeletal foundation, and fosters a deep connection to self. When practiced consistently, these exercises, in addition to dietary changes, help reverse degenerative diseases such as rheumatoid and osteo arthritis, fibromyalgia and lupus. Martial artists and healers will find this practice especially rewarding.
Is Tao Yoga Spiritual? Yes and No
Originally, Iron Shirt Chi Kung and Tao yoga principles were practiced to cultivate inner strength for self-defense. However, due to unquantifiable depth of these practices, prevails the healing and the feeling of oneness that unifies us all. Iron Shirt Chi Kung shares the internalized yin nature inherent to Taoist principles. However, Tao is not confined by any dogma and is therefore not a threat to any religion. Rather, you will find it’s a moving meditation that gains strength from inner guidance rather than external validation. Its spiritual essence simply unravels in a way unique to each person. Indeed, “The Way” is a rather thin book of Tao philosophy on wisdom of moving with the flow rather than trying to manipulate events. Taoism beliefs have more to do with cultivating self-awareness and harmony with state of being. Nevertheless, Iron Shirt Chi Kung requires quite a bit of focused intentional mental and physical practice!
Tao Yoga Breathwork
Iron Shirt Chi Kung introduces the basics of Breathwork, Inner Smile, Microcosmic Orbit, and spinal alignment as building blocks necessary to enjoy further movement meditations. The more advanced Tao yoga practices include the basic Iron Shirt:
Turtle, Golden Urn, Buffalo, Bone Marrow Breathing, Tendon Nei Kung, and various Tao Tai Chi forms and exercises.
Emphasis on special breathwork with muscle contractions is placed from the beginning and throughout. With consistent practice such breathwork creates compression, massaging the organs and facilitates the movement of Qi energy. Thereby, these compressions engage the fascia allowing it to store energy.
Interestingly, the fascia is also capable of inflating not only to massage, but also to protect your vital organs. You can visualize an inflated tire protecting the wheel or two inflated balloons, one inside the other, protecting an egg. Good body mechanics result from good structure and breathwork, which preserve and circulate energy while building strength at any age. Individualized intensity modifications will be offered with some fun partner activities.
The Six Healing Sounds Meditation offers a simple yet effective practice even for the beginner. Each sound engages the fascia around specific organ, sending healing vibrations to that organ, and normalizing emotions inherent to it.
Tao Yoga Benefits Over a Grounding Mat
A grounding mat provides passive conduction to earth’s energy. Iron Shirt Chi Kung offers an active, holistic alternative. This practice creates a “body of steel” through physical, energetic, and spiritual training. Practitioners use the ground for leverage, to strengthen tendons, and enjoy lasting vitality. Unlike a grounding mat, it fosters autonomous energy management. Iron Shirt Chi Kung also allows practitioners to connect to their inner self and grow spiritually.
